More about the region...

This region is also known as the Outeniqualand and lies at the base of the Outeniqua mountain range. The name is derived from the Khoisan who were hunter gatherer Bushmen that were indigenous to this area and means 'they who bear honey'.

The climate is mild and we do not have a specific rain season as we experience light rains throughout the year. That is why it is always green, especially in winter. Ancient and varied bushes and plants, even forests, still cover valleys, hills and mountains that are bordered by the sea.

Dolphins frolic year round in the surf, while Southern Right and Hump Back whales return each year from May till November for the annual ritual of mating and calving.

Because of the many flowers, trees, lakes and rivers there are a variety of birds that is any bird watcher's delight! The giants of the forest, namely elephants, also find their natural habitat in our region. Sadly, today they are only to be found in game reserves in the native rain forest near Knysna.
